Our Story

From Ntasa to the World: The Heartbeat of Malawoven

Sakina Nzerera Sulani is more than just a name behind the craft she is the soul of Malawoven.

Three years ago, Sakina left her home in Ntasa Village, Nthache, Mwanza District, Malawi, and arrived in South Africa. She didn’t come chasing a dream she came to survive. A mother, a provider, and a woman with extraordinary resilience, she sought domestic work to feed her family and send her children to school.

This wasn’t about ambition. It was about necessity.

But sometimes, purpose finds us.

From the very beginning, Sakina spoke with pride about her country about its beauty, its people, and the ancient artistry of Malawi’s handweaving traditions. Her words were more than memories; they were a mission waiting to be born.

And so, Malawoven was never created as a business it was sparked from a calling to become an enabler, to amplify voices that deserve to be heard.

We believe the world deserves to see what Malawi has to offer the stunning, intricate craftsmanship that has been passed down through generations of men and women. Every piece in our store is more than just decor  it is a vessel of culture, survival, and pride.

Malawoven exists to bring a piece of Malawi to the world.

Not just in the form of handcrafted cane chairs or woven pendant lights but in the spirit of resilience, artistry, and human connection. It’s a platform to support artisans who would otherwise never be given a chance to shine. A stage for Sakina’s vision, and for the countless others who hold the heartbeat of their village in their hands.

This is more than furniture.

This is a legacy woven by hand, guided by heart.
